Beginner training plan
Your first lessonI approach the first lesson by getting to know the player’s current skill level, athletic background, and goals with pickleball. From there, I focus on building a strong foundation through fundamentals such as grip, footwork, positioning, and understanding the rules and strategy of the game. I keep the environment positive, patient, and encouraging so players feel comfortable asking questions and learning at their own pace. My goal during the first lesson is to help each player gain confidence while also identifying areas we can continue improving together.
Lesson 2-3In the second lesson, beginners can expect to start building on the fundamentals from the first session. We usually focus more on consistency, proper contact, movement, and getting comfortable with rallying. I also begin introducing basic court positioning and simple strategy so players understand where to be during points, especially around the kitchen.
By the third lesson, players are typically starting to put everything together. We work more on controlled gameplay, decision-making, and learning when to speed the ball up versus when to reset the point. At this stage, I help players start recognizing patterns in real game situations so they can feel more confident transitioning from practice drills into actual games.
Lesson 4-10From lessons four through ten, we focus on building consistency and applying fundamentals in real game situations. Drills become more game-like, with an emphasis on dinking, volleys, resets, and the third shot drop.
I also introduce more strategy, including court positioning, doubles communication, and learning when to attack versus when to reset a point. As players progress, they start to think less about individual shots and more about how to construct and control points.
